Blue Crab Abundance (Age 1 and Older)

Blue crabs make up the most productive commercial and recreational fisheries in the Bay. Achieving the abundance goal of greater than 200 million spawning-age crabs will ensure that there are enough reproducing crabs in the Bay to sustain a healthy population.

Status:

Chesapeake Bay blue crab abundance for 2011 is 254 million crabs (age 1+ years). This surpasses the goal of 200 million crabs and puts the goal attainment at 127%.

Goal:

To protect the health of the blue crab stock and maintain the spawning stock at a sustainable level.
